Nachdem die ersten Discovery Tie-In Bücher als mittelmäßige Fließbandware daherkamen, landet CBS mit diesem Roman den ersten Volltreffer bei mir. Miller versteht es, die Enterprise als lebendigen Ort in die Handlung zu integrieren, die Geschichte fühlt sich dadurch "echt" an und könnte so (alle SF-Elemente ignorierend) auch auf einem modernen Kriegsschiff spielen. Er nimmt sich angenehm Zeit, das Buch wirkt nicht gehetzt und zieht sich nie, wie es andere Discovery-Bücher tun.Das Buch löst sehr gut alle angefangenen Handlungsböden auf und klärt die Fragen, die zu Beginn der zweiten Staffel ungeklärt im Raum stehen blieben. Nachdem Pike bereits relativ prominent und als einziges erwähnenswertes Highlight in Desperate Hours auftrat (wobei dessen Story und Pike-Charakterisierung seit Staffel 2 überhaupt nicht mehr funktionieren, womit man dann das Buch endgültig ad acta legen kann), kann man nur hoffen, dass es diesem Buch später einmal besser ergeht, falls doch noch die Pike-Serie kommt. Verdient hätte es das. Und sollten wir keine bekommen, dann bekommt Miller hoffentlich die Chance noch weitere Pike-Romane zu schreiben.
It was a struggle to stay engaged with this story at first. I felt bogged down until the relationship between our heroes in Starfleet and the protagonist (well, one of them) changed. The resolution to the conflict was unexpected and most welcome. This novel ends where the Spock we meet in Season Two of Discovery begins.
A great prequel to Season 2 of "Star Trek: Discovery", the author is an obvious fan of Trek. He fills in quite a bit about Pike, Number One, and Spock's characters.
It ties directly into star trek discovery season 2. Good book. Love the red angel connection. Can't wait for the next one!
Pike may be the best Captain the Enterprise ever had, and this book explores the time during the Klingon/Federation war from Season 1 of Star Trek Discovery.The plot is engaging, and well written. Narration in the audible book is spot on and it really is an enjoyable story.
